Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
To develop advanced knowledge of the assessment, investigation, and management of traumatic, musculoskeletal, spinal, head, facial, ENT, and ophthalmic emergencies.
To critically examine the principles underpinning core emergency medicine procedures, including procedural sedation, wound management, airway adjuncts, and chest procedures, within frameworks of patient safety and evidence-based practice.
To synthesise clinical, procedural, and human factors knowledge to support the prioritisation and safe management of complex injured patients in emergency care settings.
Content Summary
Trauma, Injuries & Procedural Skills develops the advanced knowledge and practical decision-making skills required to assess and manage injured patients and emergency procedures safely within high-acuity emergency care environments. The module focuses on a systematic, evidence-based approach to traumatic injuries, regional emergencies, and core emergency medicine procedures, reflecting the realities of frontline emergency department practice.
Students will explore the assessment and management of fractures, dislocations, spinal emergencies, traumatic brain injury, ENT and ophthalmic emergencies, dermatological emergencies, and limb-threatening conditions. Students will also examine the principles underpinning key emergency procedures, including procedural sedation, wound closure, regional anaesthesia, chest drain insertion, and emergency airway techniques. Alongside technical knowledge, students will critically evaluate imaging strategies, referral thresholds, patient safety, consent, human factors, and procedural risk management.
This module builds on the diagnostic reasoning skills developed earlier in the programme and prepares students for advanced resuscitation and critical care practice. It will strengthen graduates’ ability to manage trauma and procedural emergencies confidently, safely, and in line with contemporary emergency medicine standards across diverse healthcare settings.
