Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
To develop advanced competence in the assessment, resuscitation, and management of critically ill or arrested patients within high-acuity emergency settings.
To critically examine emergency department critical care principles, including ventilatory support, haemodynamic monitoring, point-of-care ultrasound, and safe escalation of care.
To synthesise resuscitation science, trauma systems, and crisis resource management principles to support leadership and decision-making during complex resuscitation and major incident responses.
Content Summary
Resuscitation & Critical Care develops the advanced clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and situational awareness required to manage critically ill and life-threatening emergencies in the emergency department. The module focuses on the recognition, stabilisation, and ongoing management of patients with severe physiological compromise, preparing you to lead effectively in high-pressure clinical environments.
Students will critically examine the principles and evidence base underpinning cardiac arrest management, airway emergencies, respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, major trauma, and critical care delivery within the emergency department. Topics include advanced life support, ventilation strategies, haemodynamic monitoring, point-of-care ultrasound, sedation, retrieval medicine, and major incident management. The module also emphasises crisis resource management, non-technical skills, ethical decision-making, and leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
As a central component of the Emergency Medicine programme, this module integrates and extends the clinical reasoning and trauma management skills developed earlier in the programme. It will equip graduates to manage complex, critically ill patients safely and systematically, while developing the professional confidence, teamwork, and leadership capabilities expected of advanced emergency medicine practitioners in diverse healthcare settings.
