Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To develop advanced competence in the assessment and management of acutely ill or injured children, neonates, and other vulnerable patient groups in emergency care.

  • To critically examine the emergency management of mental health crises, behavioural disturbance, toxicological emergencies, and environmental illness using trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches.

  • To synthesise clinical, ethical, safeguarding, and communication principles to support the management and advocacy of vulnerable patients across complex emergency presentations

Content Summary

Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Mental Health & Vulnerable Patients develops the advanced knowledge, clinical judgement, and communication skills required to care for children and vulnerable patient groups presenting to the emergency department. The module focuses on the unique physiological, psychological, safeguarding, and ethical challenges associated with high-risk and complex patient populations across diverse emergency care settings.

Students will examine paediatric assessment and resuscitation, neonatal emergencies, safeguarding and non-accidental injury, mental health crises, behavioural disturbance, toxicology, environmental emergencies, frailty, and obstetric and gynaecological emergencies. The module also explores trauma-informed care, capacity and consent, de-escalation strategies, safeguarding frameworks, and the management of vulnerable adults, including those affected by domestic violence, substance dependency, homelessness, or exploitation.

This module broadens the scope of emergency medicine practice by emphasising holistic, patient-centred, and culturally competent care. It will prepare graduates to manage complex clinical, ethical, and safeguarding situations confidently and compassionately, while advocating effectively for vulnerable patients within multidisciplinary and international emergency care environments.
