Module Aims
To develop advanced knowledge of the diagnosis, investigation, and management of cardiovascular and respiratory disease within internal medicine practice.
To critically evaluate the evidence base, pathophysiological mechanisms, and national and international guidelines underpinning cardiology and respiratory medicine.
To apply advanced clinical reasoning to the management of complex acute and chronic cardiopulmonary presentations, including conditions involving both systems simultaneously.
Content Summary
This module develops advanced knowledge and clinical reasoning across two of the highest-burden specialties in internal medicine. Cardiovascular and respiratory disease account for a substantial proportion of acute admissions and complex chronic disease management across NHS and international healthcare settings, making this module central to the programme's aim of equipping graduates for safe, effective practice across undifferentiated and specialist presentations.
The module develops students’ ability to critically evaluate pathophysiological mechanisms, national and international guidelines, and complex evidence base, including conditions involving both the cardiopulmonary systems. The analytical and reasoning skills developed here are directly applicable to MRCP(UK) preparation and complement the evidence appraisal demands of every other module, including the Capstone Project.
