Module Aims

  • To develop an advanced understanding of the diagnosis, investigation, and management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease across acute and chronic clinical settings. 

  • To critically engage with current evidence, pharmacological principles, and clinical guidelines relevant to gastroenterology and hepatology practice. 

  • To apply analytical and clinical reasoning skills to the safe management of complex presentations across the breadth of gastroenterological and hepatological conditions commonly encountered nationally and internationally. 

Content Summary

This module develops advanced clinical knowledge and analytical reasoning across the full breadth of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary medicine, from acute emergencies to complex chronic disease. Gastroenterological and hepatological presentations are among the most frequently encountered in internal medicine practice nationally and internationally, and this module equips graduates to manage them safely, effectively, and in accordance with current evidence. 

The module places particular emphasis on medicines optimisation, nutritional considerations, and the critical evaluation of guidelines, skills that complement those developed across the wider programme and that are directly relevant to both safe prescribing in complex patients and to the independent scholarly inquiry required by the Capstone Project.
