Module Aims

  • To develop an advanced understanding of the physiological, pathological, epidemiological, and pharmacological principles underpinning internal medicine practice. 

  • To critically evaluate the principles of safe prescribing, medicines optimisation, and evidence-informed clinical decision-making. 

  • To integrate clinical sciences and pharmacological reasoning to support the management of acute and complex presentations across internal medicine specialties. 

Content Summary

This module develops an advanced understanding of the physiological, pathological, epidemiological, and pharmacological principles that underpin the breadth of internal medicine practice. Rather than focusing on a single specialty, this module provides the scientific and pharmacological foundations that connect and contextualise learning across all other modules, directly supporting the programme's aim of developing analytically rigorous, evidence-informed clinical decision-making. 

The module places particular emphasis on clinical epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, safe prescribing, and the social and population health determinants of disease, equipping students to critically evaluate the evidence base across any clinical domain. These skills are directly transferable to every other module in the programme and are fundamental to the independent critical appraisal demanded by the Capstone Project.
