Module Aims

  • To develop advanced technical proficiency in hazard identification and quantitative risk assessment, enabling students to evaluate and mitigate failures within complex industrial systems and high-risk environments.

  • To cultivate a critical understanding of legal frameworks, contrasting UK health and safety legislation with international standards to ensure practitioners can navigate and implement global compliance protocols effectively.

  • To integrate emerging technologies into safety strategy, specifically focusing on the application of predictive AI and safety analytics to transition from reactive monitoring to proactive accident prevention.

Content Summary

This module introduces Process Safety and Risk Management  as a critical component of advanced professional practice within complex organisational and high-hazard contexts. It moves beyond procedural compliance to develop the critical judgement required to lead effective, evidence-based safety strategies in data-driven industries.

You will explore advanced approaches to risk identification, process safety, failure analysis and legal compliance, drawing on UK and international regulatory frameworks. Key themes include incident investigation, development of safety protocols, and the interaction between organisational culture, governance and operational decision-making. The module also examines the growing role of digital and analytical tools, including safety analytics and AI-enabled approaches, in proactive risk management.

Learning is grounded in applied case-based activities and professional scenarios, enabling you to engage critically with academic research, professional standards and sector practice. Emphasis is placed on application and evaluation rather than checklist compliance, supporting you to diagnose complex safety problems, balance ethical and practical trade-offs, and justify robust interventions.

By the end of the module, you will be prepared to apply advanced risk and safety principles credibly within senior professional SHEM roles.
