Module Aims

  • To analyse human and individual characteristics and other environmental, organisational and job factors which influence behaviour at work.

  • To explain how these human factors (HF) can impact upon safe, effective and efficient operations across the EE&D life-cycle.

Content Summary

This module introduces the student to the concepts and principles of Human Factors (HF) and how they can affect safe, effective, and efficient Explosives Engineering and Design (EE&D) operations. It provides an insight into how human behaviours are a critical factor in taking a broad systems-thinking approach to the complexity of working a high-hazard environment, and they will be encouraged to analyse case studies of major accidents in high-hazard industries to illustrate the potential magnitude of seemingly small HF failings. Students will develop knowledge and understanding that is essential to safe, efficient and effective working, supervision and management processes and procedures across the whole of the ordnance, munitions and explosives (OME) life-cycle from research and development, through manufacture, testing and evaluation, handling, transport, storage and, where necessary, disposal.
