Module Aims

  • To define the principles of ordnance, munitions and explosives (OME) safety management through the medium of the UN’s International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG).

  • To explain the principles of OME legislation and regulations via the IATG

Content Summary

OME are used as a tool in the construction, demolitions and the hydrocarbon exploration and extraction industries, as well as in defence. If OME are not handled, moved or stored with sufficient care, unplanned explosions and fires can occur. Historically, manufacture and storage of explosives was a cottage industry, even taking place in the confines of major cities. Legislation and regulations, with suitable enforcement, ensures the safety of the public and in the workplace, while enabling the safe manufacture, handling and use of explosives.

This module explains the principles and recognised good practices of OME Safety Management and the principles of explosives legislation and regulation, via the medium of the detailed and peer-reviewed, nationality-agnostic, UN International Ammunition Technical Guidelines. The module enables a student to engage in the implementation of, and to describe the underpinning logic of, these good practices in the workplace
