Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To develop foundational knowledge of human anatomical structures and physiological systems?relevant to sport and exercise.

  • To introduce key principles of biomechanics that influence human movement mechanics.

  • Explore key theoretical and applied areas of psychology that relate specifically to sport and exercise contexts.

Content Summary

Discover how the body and mind work together to power human performance. This module explores the integrated science of sport and exercise, combining anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology to provide a comprehensive understanding of how humans move, perform, and adapt.

You will examine human anatomy and how the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, thermoregulatory, and nervous systems interact to support movement and exercise. Building on this, exercise physiology will be explored in depth, focusing on how the body responds to acute exercise and adapts to training over time, including energy system contribution, cardiovascular and respiratory responses, fatigue mechanisms, and physiological adaptations that underpin performance and health.

The module also introduces biomechanics, enabling you to understand how mechanical principles and forces influence movement efficiency, technique, and injury risk in sport and exercise settings. In parallel, sport psychology will be explored to consider the cognitive and emotional factors that influence motivation, focus, confidence, and performance outcomes. By integrating these key disciplines, you will develop a holistic understanding of the interaction between body systems and behaviour in sport and exercise contexts, and how these influence performance, health, and participation across a range of populations. This knowledge will support the development of analytical, problem-solving, and applied skills relevant to sport science practice.
