Module Aims
To provide a practical and legal background to the nature and function of international trade and competition law policy.
To enable students to apply the principles of international trade and competition law and policy in a professional and competent manner within international and regional contexts.
To develop students' ability to evaluate and respond to legal, commercial and regulatory issues arising in global markets
Content Summary
This module examines the legal and regulatory frameworks governing international trade and competition within global markets. Students will explore how businesses operate across jurisdictions and how trade rules, market regulation and competition law influence commercial strategy, market access and economic activity. Key topics include the World Trade Organization framework, trade liberalisation, trade remedies, trade in services, foreign investment, multinational enterprises, market power, anti-competitive conduct, merger control and dispute resolution.
Through applied case studies and problem based learning, students will develop the ability to identify and evaluate commercial and regulatory risks arising in cross-border business activities. The module emphasises the practical application of legal principles to contemporary business challenges and develops commercial awareness, policy literacy and professional judgement. By combining legal analysis with regulatory and business perspectives, the module prepares students for advisory, compliance, policy and strategic decision-making roles within international and regulatory environments.
