Module Aims

  • To develop students' subject-specific, analytical and design-thinking skills through interdisciplinary collaboration to address defined sustainability and engineering challenges.

  • To support the development of the academic, personal and professional skills required for effective engineering practice, including communication, teamwork, self-management and professional responsibility.

  • To foster independent learning and a responsible approach to aircraft maintenance engineering, enabling students to apply the principles, behaviours and standards required for safe, compliant and effective professional practice.

Content Summary

This module enables students to demonstrate independent learning through self-directed engagement with CAD software, developing competence by reviewing and completing structured tutorials. It also supports the development of professional skills expected within the engineering discipline, including effective teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration, communication and presentation, critical self-reflection, and the ability to organise, prioritise and manage time. Students will refine their personal development plans and begin to evidence the application of these skills across Level 5 study.

A core element of the module is participation in an interdisciplinary design thinking project, through which students will contextualise their subject specific knowledge, skills and behaviours while contributing to a team tasked with addressing a defined sustainability challenge.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Interpret aircraft engineering documentation by reading and applying engineering drawings, wiring and schematic diagrams, ATA100-structured manuals, and use computer-aided design (CAD) software competently to produce accurate basic engineering drawings, demonstrating appropriate tool selection, workflow understanding, and adherence to standard drawing conventions.
LO2 Analyse and apply engineering project-management principles within wider business and organisational contexts, demonstrating effective professional communication, ethical and sustainable decision-making, and the ability to collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to address complex sustainability challenges
