Module Aims
To develop students’ understanding of the regulatory frameworks governing aircraft maintenance and continuing airworthiness, enabling them to interpret and apply EASA/CAA Part 145, Part 66 and associated legislative requirements within professional practice. The module aims to build learners’ competence in navigating organisational procedures, safety responsibilities, privileges and limitations of certifying staff, and the legal obligations that underpin compliant maintenance operations. Through analysis of real regulatory scenarios, students will strengthen their ability to evaluate regulatory compliance, identify risks arising from non-conformance, and apply legislation appropriately within an aviation maintenance environment.
Content Summary
The module explores the regulatory environment governing aircraft maintenance within the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider international aviation system. Students examine how ICAO standards shape national legislation, how the UK CAA requirements align with or diverge from retained EASA rules, and how regulatory responsibilities flow from international conventions through national authorities to approved organisations and certifying staff. Emphasis is placed on understanding the structure of aviation regulation, including oversight, compliance monitoring, enforcement, and the legal obligations placed on maintenance organisations and licensed engineers.
Learners study the core regulatory domains underpinning aircraft airworthiness and operations. This includes the EASA/CAA Basic Regulation as the foundation for rulemaking, Initial Airworthiness and Certification Specifications governing design and production approval, Continuing Airworthiness requirements under Part M/Part CAMO and Part 145, and Air Operations rules that link operational control with maintenance responsibilities. Together, these areas provide a comprehensive understanding of how aircraft are designed, certified, maintained and operated within a legally compliant framework.

Learning Outcomes
| # | Learning Outcome |
|---|---|
| LO1 | Analyse the structure of UK, European and international aviation regulation, explaining how ICAO, CAA and EASA requirements interact to govern organisational responsibilities, certifying staff privileges and the legal framework for compliant aircraft maintenance. |
| LO2 | Apply key regulatory domains — including the Basic Regulation, Initial Airworthiness, Continuing Airworthiness and Air Operations — to evaluate the implications of regulatory compliance and non-compliance within aircraft design, certification, maintenance and operational environments. |
