Module Aims

  • To provide students with a foundation in electronics, servo systems and digital techniques, enabling them to develop essential theoretical knowledge and apply basic analytical methods to engineering problems.

  • To develop students' understanding of aircraft electronic and digital systems, including their principles of operation, applications within aerospace engineering, and the environmental conditions that influence their performance and reliability.

Content Summary

This module introduces students to the fundamental principles of electronics, digital techniques and aircraft digital systems. It begins with an exploration of semiconductor devices, focusing on the P–N junction and the characteristics, applications and basic testing of diodes and transistors. Students then develop an understanding of fundamental digital electronics, including logic gates, combinational and sequential circuits, operational amplifiers, and the principles of analogue-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analogue (D/A) conversion. The electronics component concludes with the study of aircraft transducers and synchronous data transmission systems.

The digital techniques component develops an understanding of fundamental computer terminology, architecture and operation before examining the application of digital technologies within aircraft systems. Topics include aircraft data bus architectures, display technologies and digital communication methods used in modern aircraft.

The final part of the module examines the structure, operation and built-in test equipment (BITE) functions of key aircraft electronic and digital systems. Students investigate the principles and applications of Electronic Flight Instrument Systems (EFIS), Electronic Centralised Aircraft Monitoring (ECAM), Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting Systems (EICAS), Fly-by-Wire (FBW) systems, Inertial Reference Systems (IRS) and Flight Management Systems (FMS), developing an appreciation of their role in the safe and efficient operation of modern aircraft.
