Module Aims

  • Introduce students to the fundamental materials, tools and processes used in contemporary fashion production.

  • Develop skills in garment construction and pattern-cutting, enabling students to translate design ideas into three-dimensional form.

  • Support students to explore making as a problem-solving activity, encouraging experimentation, reflection and confidence in practical studio practice.

Content Summary

This module introduces key processes and skills in understanding materials and the role of pattern cutting and garment construction in informing fashion design.

Through analysing the anatomy of garments, students are introduced to construction techniques, pattern cutting and materials and how they are informed by and inform design and production decisions.

In an increasingly digital industry, it is important to remain grounded in the fashion garment as a physical and material object- an interactive object that is shaped and shapes the body. The worn experience is central to the fashion industry and technical knowledge is key to understanding the worn environment.
