Module Aims

he main aims of the module are:

  • To develop students’ understanding of storytelling, oracy, and pupil voice as key concepts in education, and their role in supporting learning, participation, and inclusion

  • To enable students to apply storytelling approaches to the design and delivery of learning experiences that support the development of pupils’ oracy skills and engagement.

  • To foster students’ ability to reflect on and evaluate the use of storytelling and oracy in promoting inclusive practice and empowering pupil voice in educational contexts.

Content Summary

In this module, you will explore how storytelling can be used to support learning, participation, and inclusion in educational settings. You will be introduced to the concept of oracy—the ability to communicate effectively through speaking and listening—and consider why developing pupils’ voices is an important part of teaching and learning.

You will examine key ideas about how people learn through language and narrative, drawing on the work of theorists such as Lev Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner, and explore how these ideas can be applied in practice. Throughout the module, you will take part in a range of interactive workshops where you will develop your own confidence in speaking, listening, and storytelling.

Using a Challenge-Based Learning approach, you will work towards designing and delivering your own storytelling intervention. This will help you understand how structured teaching approaches can support the development of pupils’ oracy skills and create opportunities for all learners to participate and be heard.

By the end of the module, you will have gained practical experience in planning, delivering, and reflecting on teaching approaches that promote pupil voice, inclusion, and engagement, as well as developing your own communication and professional skills.
