Module Aims

  • Aim 1: To develop a systematic understanding of molecular biology, microbiology, and disease processes, and the application of this to clinical practice.

  • Aim 2: To explore the ethical, legal, and professional frameworks underpinning clinical practice.

  • Aim 3: To encourage reflective practice, and the importance of its implementation in the development of safe and effective clinical practice.

Content Summary

This module develops your understanding of the biological and professional foundations of clinical practice.

The module will support you in linking scientific knowledge to the development and progression of human disease, helping you to understand how pathology affects the body at a cellular and systemic level, and how this informs clinical practice.

Alongside this, you will examine the ethical, legal and professional frameworks that guide safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Drawing on your clinical placement experiences, you will reflect on real-world practice and consider how theory informs decision-making in healthcare settings.

This integrated approach will help you build the knowledge, skills, and professional awareness required for safe and effective clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Critically evaluate the molecular and microbial basis of human disease and relate these mechanisms to the principles underpinning basic clinical skills and safe working practices used in healthcare and laboratory settings.
LO2 Demonstrate effective communication and reflective practice in simulated or clinical contexts, recognising the legal, ethical and safety considerations associated with clinical practice and patient interaction.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Synchronous Onsite Practical Assessment OSCE Students will be expected to interpret these measurements of the body's basic physiological functions, and use them to monitor physical health, identify acute medical issues, and track patient recovery. The simulated scenario reflects real-world healthcare environments, and assessment styles implemented in medical training, where professional conduct, clarity of patient communication, and problem-solving are essential. 15 N/A 40 No 40
Asynchronous Assessment Self-reflective Assessment An element of Student Choice is enabled here, in the option to record the reflection as a 15-minute presentation, or to produce a 1500-word written reflection, promoting inclusivity. 15 1500 60 No 40
