Module Aims

  • Aim 1: To develop critical understanding of the three-dimensional structure and relationships within human anatomy, and the advanced applications of physiological concepts.

  • Aim 2: To explore anatomical and physiological variation, pathology, and their clinical implications, with consideration of cultural and sociopolitical factors

  • Aim 3: To promote ethical, legal, and professional practice in the study of human anatomical material.

Content Summary

Delivered in collaboration with Cardiff University, this module develops your advanced understanding of human anatomy and physiology through the exploration of the body’s three-dimensional organisation and the relationships between tissues and organ systems, and the significance of varied physiological states.

Using cadaveric material and/or advanced digital anatomical resources, you will examine anatomical structures in detail, considering variation, anomalies, and pathology, and their clinical significance and interplay.

You will be encouraged to think critically about how different body systems interact and how anatomical, physiological and clinal variations can influence clinical conditions and patient outcomes. Alongside the biological variation found across human populations, we will examine health through a medical anthropology lens, considering how culture affects the experiences of illness and the healthcare system.

Alongside this, the module emphasises the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities associated with the study of human anatomical material, including adherence to the Human Tissue Act 2004 and relevant health and safety practices.

This integrated approach will support you in developing both technical anatomical knowledge and the professional standards required for safe and respectful practice in laboratory and clinical settings.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Critically evaluate the three-dimensional organisation of the human body and the physical relationships between tissues and organ systems through the analysis of cadaveric material and/or advanced digital anatomical resources, identifying anatomical variation, anomalies and pathology and assessing their potential clinical significance and interplay between clinical conditions.
LO2 Apply and evaluate the ethical, legal and professional responsibilities associated with the study of human anatomical material, including adherence to the Human Tissue Act (2004) and relevant health and safety procedures in laboratory and clinical environments.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Asynchronous Assessment Case study The structured pathological case study is designed to deepen students’ ability to interpret and apply anatomical knowledge within clinically relevant contexts. 0 3500 60 No 40
Synchronous Onsite Assessment  Classroom Test - Time Constrained (Onsite)  Students will be assessed on their ability to articulate and recall anatomical knowledge through means of a viva and anatomical spotter test. Students will demonstrate depth of understanding, spatial awareness, and professionalism, while also reinforcing ethical and legal considerations in anatomical study. 90 N/A 40 No 40
