Module Aims
To develop an advanced understanding of the pharmacological and toxicological effects of substances and their significance in forensic investigations.
To develop students' ability to critically evaluate, interpret, and justify forensic toxicological evidence obtained from biological samples using authentic case-based scenarios.
Content Summary
This module provides an introduction to the principles of forensic toxicology, focusing on how chemicals and drugs interact with the human body through the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME). You will explore the chemical properties that influence these processes and how they affect toxicological outcomes.
The module examines a range of substances relevant to forensic toxicology, including drugs of abuse, new psychoactive substances (NPS) and common poisons. You will develop an understanding of their mechanisms of action, toxic effects and the challenges associated with their detection and interpretation in forensic investigations.
A strong emphasis is placed on analytical detection techniques used in forensic toxicology laboratories, including instrumental methods such as GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. You will learn how these techniques are applied to different biological samples and how toxicological findings are interpreted within forensic and legal contexts.
Case-based examples are used throughout the module to help you apply scientific knowledge to realistic forensic scenarios. This will support your understanding of the role of toxicology in criminal investigations, legal proceedings and clinical decision-making, while developing your ability to interpret and communicate toxicological evidence clearly and professionally.
