Educational Aim
The main aims of the course are:
• Equip graduates with a systematic approach to expedition medicine planning, to enable the application of evidence based clinical skills and knowledge to minimise risk and maximise health before, during and after expeditions.
• Enable graduates to demonstrate the ability to provide sound clinical and situational judgement in environments prone to rapid change and uncertain outcomes.
• Equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to anticipate, plan for and treat common and potential health problems which may arise on expeditions.
• Equip students with life-long learning and advanced problem-solving skills that they can apply within the field of expedition medicine.
• Enable graduates to apply the knowledge, approaches and skills gained within expedition medicine to wider emergency situations.
• Enable graduates to deliver leadership to teams in multi-agency, multi-cultural and/or international contexts.
• Equip practitioners to become leaders in the field of expedition and wilderness medicine
• Produce graduates who can utilise a variety of research methodologies to analyse, interpret and evaluate data pertinent to expedition and wilderness medicine.
• Produce graduates who can independently carry out research-based investigations, collate data, analyse and synthesise findings and present the data to the expedition and wilderness medicine professional discipline/wider community.

Work Placements
As postgraduate professionals, students are usually already employed in a related area. They are responsible for their own learning but where opportunities exist to enhance the practice area students are encouraged to engage with employers.

Learning Support
The learning support available through the course:
Induction
Students attend an online induction, introducing students to the online learning, navigation of the learning platform Moodle and study skills support, including the elements of assessment, referencing, critical appraisal, reflective practice, levels of evidence and how to write scientifically. This induction is videoed and is available for all students online throughout the course. All students are required to view the lectures, which are filmed and posted on the course website before the course commences. These induction lectures are designed to prepare students for their studies and include specialist support on copyright, referencing and research activities which students may undertake throughout the course. The use of referencing software, advanced literature searching and accessing other academic and research libraries is also covered. Students have full access to a designated in-house Student Support team for the full duration of the course.
Personal Academic Coach
Students are encouraged to contact their module tutor for academic queries and the Student Support team for other help and advice.
Students on this course are registered healthcare professionals who may encounter these subjects in clinical practice as well as on the course. If a student discloses that a subject is sensitive to them because of personal circumstances the tutor can respond on an individual basis, and fellow students can provide peer support via the social forum. The course conforms to USW policies for suspension of studies and extenuating circumstances.
Office hours
9am-5pm Monday to Friday for office support with the learning platform; however, tutors are contactable over weekends.
Student Support also offer an appointment booking service where students are able to schedule a call with Student Support to go through any queries about their enrolment and Moodle (the learning platform) throughout their time on the course.
Tutorials
One tutor per 10-15 students guides student learning and is available for academic support and contactable via Moodle. The role of the tutor is to facilitate students’ learning rather than to provide didactic teaching. The tutor will stimulate the students to pursue appropriate lines of academic inquiry and provide direction to ensure the module learning outcomes are met.
Research Supervision
Individual supervision between tutor and student is provided for the professional project. Guidance on frequency and format is given on the course website and in the student handbook.

Directed reading is provided on the course website (Moodle).
Advice Centres
Students have full access to the University of South Wales Advice Zone as well as a designated in-house Student Support team for the full duration of the course.
Students are also able to access the University Wellbeing service to discuss any issues which arise from their course via http://thewellbeingservice.southwales.ac.uk/.

Progression Route
The following progression routes are available:A formal qualification will grant students more employment prospects in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine field. Students would be likely to take on roles as an expedition medic, planning, managing and undertaking various expeditions.
Entry Requirements
Admission to the course is typically through the following qualifications:
Healthcare professionals working within a relevant clinical setting, both UK and overseas, with a related healthcare science degree (including international qualifications) are eligible to apply for the two-year MSc course. The two-year course consists of eight modules (180 credits), with the first six modules (120 credits) deriving from the Postgraduate Diploma. Applicants should work in a setting where they can apply their learning to practice. Students who apply for, and successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine may apply to complete the MSc in a further year.
Applicants without the above academic criteria but with relevant/suitable experience can apply. Applications will be judged on the individual specifics of background and qualifications including ability to work at postgraduate level (applicants may be asked to submit a piece of work for assessment to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at postgraduate level and demonstrate requisite clinical/professional knowledge).
