Teaching and Assessment
Learning and Teaching Methods
The Advanced Clinical Leadership Programme is a practical programme, designed to support clinical professionals with the capability and ambition to take up senior leadership roles across Wales. The module and assessments map the structure of the programme which focuses on three main themes: Leading Self, People and Systems.
Wales NHS/Individual Health Boards nominate and sponsor clinical staff to complete the module. HEIW staff oversee all elements of the delivery and organisation of the module including management of the VLE and provision of teaching delivery. The teaching methods vary from in-person to online sessions and are appropriately scheduled across a 10-month period. This provides an opportunity for clinical leaders across NHS Wales to network and establish connections, whilst also being mindful of the demands of their roles within the health service. A 3-day residential learning community provides the opportunity for the Programme participants to practice and reflect on their leadership styles and behaviours within a team environment: a vital component of leadership development. Note that expert speakers are invited to each workshop as part of the learning and teaching. USW course leader and link officer will oversee quality assurance and reporting mechanisms/requirements.
Employer Engagement
Work-based Learning HEIW and NHS Wales. As senior clinical leaders and postgraduate professionals, students are already employed in a related area. They are responsible for their own learning but where opportunities exist to enhance the practice area students are encouraged to engage with their employers.
Means of Assessment
Groupwork and reflective practice, mentor sessions/mentee sessions. Tutors direct students to work that will help them achieve the learning outcomes. Study - Students are expected to work independently to read widely around the subject areas to enhance and enrich learning and meet the learning outcomes.
Learning Support
The NHS Wales Advanced Clinical Leadership content will be delivered over a 10-month period utilising a blended learning and teaching approach of online and in-person sessions. There will also be a Residential Learning Community as part of the content delivery.

Methods Of Quality Standards
The University provides a Course and module Link Officer who oversees all links with the HEIW delivery team . The HEIW are advanced clinical leaders who deliver the specialist content and assessments. The Course Link Officer oversees module content in order to maintain USW quality procedures, in collaboration with the HEIW delivery team.
The HEIW delivery team follows the University requirements for partner organisations and adopts the University’s quality assurance processes for course management including course monitoring and academic infringements.

Course Monitoring
The University is responsible for both the standards of its awards and for the quality of its students’ learning experience. HEIW follows the guidelines for partner organisations in contributing to continuous quality assurance and improvement, to evaluate and improve course quality, ensure the best possible student experience within the resource available and to identify and disseminate good practice. It also ensures that appropriate action is taken to remedy any identified shortcomings and enhance provision.
The student feedback obtained is fed into the review and made available to the course leader.
External Examiner
External examining provides one of the principal means for maintaining UK academic standards within autonomous higher education providers. The majority are drawn from other higher education institutions in the UK. In some cases there will be external examiners drawn from industry or practice.
They provide carefully considered advice on the academic standards of the courses and/or modules to which they have been assigned and can offer advice on good practice and opportunities to enhance the quality of those courses/modules. They are also able to offer an informed view of how standards compare with the same or similar awards at other higher education providers (primarily in the UK, and sometimes overseas as well) of which they have experience.
External examiners provide of annual written reports to the University based on what he/she has observed of the University’s assessment processes and student assessed work.
