Module Aims

This module aims to:

- Introduce play based therapeutic models for working with families.

- Provide students with an understanding of development and change within families and children.

- Encourage students to reflect on their own family history in the context of current research into human development.

Content Summary

In this module students will study play based therapeutic models for working with families, such as Filial Therapy, Theraplay and Child Parent Relationship Therapy, in which the play therapist mentors and supports caregivers in using play therapeutically with their own children. Students will consider psychological roles within families, and factors which foster psychological health for children. They will reflect upon their personal family history, and consider the impact of personal factors upon the development of their play therapy skills. Ethical issues in working with children and their families will be addressed.
