Module Aims

To enable the Student Veterinary Nurse to demonstrate competence across all Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Competences and Skills.

To provide an RCVS accredited OSCE that leads to entry onto the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses.

Content Summary

The content of this module will be applied across all domains of veterinary nursing practice and includes:

Demonstrating awareness of animal welfare and maintaining a safe environment.

Practising evidence-based veterinary nursing for patient-centred care.

Completion of the post-Clinical Placement Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) in the following domains: medication administration, bandaging, handling, anaesthesia, theatre practice, radiography, nursing, infection control, laboratory, pharmacy.

This module includes the final OSCE, an RCVS accredited end-point assessment that leads to entry onto the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses.

This module includes a portfolio of practical task performance and reflection, in preparation for the final OSCE.

The RCVS Day One Competences and Day One Skills for Veterinary Nurses are the minimum essential requirements that all student veterinary nurses are expected to have met in order to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses. Further information can be found at www.rcvs.org.uk

The content of this module will cover the following RCVS Day One Competences: 1, 4-9, 12-13, 15, 17, 21-26, 29-30, 32-33, 35.

The content of this module will cover the following RCVS Day One Skills for Veterinary Nurses: 1.1-1.2, 2.1-2.11, 3.1-3.5, 4.5-4.12, 5.2-5.9, 6.1, 6.3, 7.1-7.3, 8.3-8.4, 9.1-9.2, 9.7-9.8, 10.2.
