Module Aims

The aim of the module is for the student to acquire the theoretical understanding of a range of themes to inform contemporary critical care. The aim is to explore effective coordination of care with a focus on rehabilitation, ethics as well as psychosocial aspects relevant to caring for critically ill patients. Professional issues, including quality, safety, leadership and workforce wellbeing will be explored.

Content Summary

Analyse the psychological and sociological impact of critical illness on the patient, relative and nursing staff and demonstrate strategies to minimize the impact of these. ·

Analyse and debate recent and current developments, initiatives, and resources in the management of the critically ill patients and the implications for professional, legal and ethical practice. ·

Understanding compassionate leadership and how this influences the delivery of critical care.

Recognise early clinical signs of critical illness, be able to take appropriate action in such circumstances but recognise limitations of own practice and know when to seek assistance where appropriate. ·
