Module Aims

To enable students to be flexible and adaptable to changing environments and working methods.

To develop skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the creative industries, its processes and business issues.

To demonstrate creativity, self-direction, reflexivity and to manage time and resources effectively by drawing on planning and organisational skills.

Content Summary

This module focuses on Employability and includes the minimum 70 hours of Work Based Learning (WBL) by offering ‘real world’ challenges, creative and technical obstacles whilst requiring students to reflect on their professional conduct, skills learnt, and experiences of the workplace.

The module will see students going to various placement opportunities in the local area (Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfil). Students will work with the organisations on projects devised by the organisations in agreement with tutors. The projects will give students real world work experience and open up an understanding of local opportunities for work in the local environment.

Opportunities may include:

·        Digital archiving projects

·        Artist in residence projects

·        Curating projects

·        Community Art Projects

Students are expected to act in a professional capacity and demonstrate their ability to work within the organisations.

Placements will offer creative and practical projects through which students will develop skills, gain experience, and network with professionals in the field of the creative industries.

Students will gain an understanding of the wide range of opportunities to work within the creative industries as an artist, applying the creative and critical skills they have thus far developed to meet the requirements of placement providers.

Locations and Organisations for placement include:

·       National Museum and Galleries of Wales (conservation, archiving, curating, etc) including Cardiff Museum, Saint Fagan’s (Museum of Welsh Life, Cynon Valley Museum in Aberdare (Link established).

·       Cyfarthfa Castle (with especial hope that the museum’s proposal to become the Contemporary Art Gallery of Wales is successful) (Link established).

·       Prince Charles Hospital (Link established).

·       Participate in, or develop community art projects and/or collaborate with local artists and organizations.
