Module Aims

To facilitate the development of the skills, knowledge and personal attributes required to demonstrate competent and safe practice within a pluralistic framework.

To demonstrate use of knowledge and analytical understanding of theory and evidence which supports and evaluates safe and effective counselling practice.

To demonstrate application of theory, evidence, ethical standards and self-awareness to inform counselling practice within a professional context.

Content Summary

Theory:

Further development of contemporary humanistic and cognitive behavioural theory and skills.

Pluralism in practice - client choice, working with goals, constructive growth.

The short-term solution-focused brief therapy model (SFBT) and further development of skills drawn from SFBT.

Professional Practice;

The BACP Ethical Framework in practice.

Case conceptualisation within a pluralistic approach.

Cultural competence & working with diversity in practice.

Skills Development:

Humanistic skills

CBT skills

Working with specific client problems (e.g. anxiety, depression) within a pluralistic framework.

Working with outcome measures.

Managing endings and service transitions.

*In order to meet the Professional Practice criteria for the course it is a requirement that you attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all timetabled lectures, meetings and other learning activities arranged as part of this module.
