Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • Develop advanced competence in assessing, diagnosing, and managing complex sports injuries using evidence-informed practice.

  • Apply advanced skills in acute and pre-hospital care for managing life-threatening and traumatic sports injuries.

  • Foster autonomous, reflective, and professional practice within multidisciplinary sport and exercise settings.

Content Summary

This module provides an in-depth exploration of advanced clinical reasoning, assessment, and management strategies within sport and exercise therapy. Building on your prior clinical and theoretical knowledge, you will develop the capacity to critically evaluate and apply evidence-informed approaches to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex sports-related injuries. You will refine your ability to recognise and manage both musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal pathologies, demonstrating a critical understanding of differential diagnosis and appropriate referral pathways.

The module also equips you with advanced skills in acute care and pre-hospital emergency management, enabling you to respond effectively to life-threatening injuries and medical emergencies in sport and exercise environments. Through simulated practice and applied learning, you will develop competence in implementing and reviewing Emergency Action Plans, performing pitch-side emergency procedures, and managing medical handovers in line with professional standards. Reflection and professional development underpin this module, encouraging you to evaluate your clinical decision-making processes and treatment outcomes. By the end of the module, you will be able to demonstrate advanced clinical competence, autonomy, and professional accountability in the management of sports injuries across diverse and dynamic settings.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Practical Assessment (EX) Practical Examination 1 Assessment 1 – Injury Assessment (Real-life patient student choice) This assessment evaluates students’ ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills in a realistic clinical setting. Students can choose their own patient within the university sport injury clinic; the only requirement is that this represents the first time the student has assessed the specific injury 75 N/A 50 No 40
Asynchronous Assessment Portfolio Assessment 2. Portfolio – Sport Trauma Management. Practical Trauma Scenario – Pass / Fail. Reflective VIVA on practical sport trauma scenario – Pass / Fail Written examination closed book - mix of open and closed short answer questions – Sport Trauma Management – Graded (overall grade will be from this component of the portfolio) This assessment is designed to assess students’ knowledge, practical skills, and clinical reasoning in the recognition, assessment, and management of sports-related trauma. The portfolio combines an online multiple-choice questionnaire (MSQ) with a practical examination and viva using moulage scenarios, providing a comprehensive evaluation of both theoretical understanding and applied clinical competen 90 N/A 50 No 40
