Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To develop students’ ability to design and conduct independent research in sports therapy and rehabilitation, applying appropriate methodologies and adhering to ethical and professional standards.

  • To enhance students’ skills in analysing, interpreting, and critically evaluating research data, integrating findings with existing literature and evidence-based practice.

  • To prepare students to effectively communicate and disseminate research findings to both academic and professional audiences, while reflecting on the research process and its implications for future practice.

Content Summary

This module is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to design, conduct, and critically evaluate a formal research project within sport and exercise therapy. You will develop the ability to formulate focused research questions, select appropriate methodologies, collect and analyse empirical data, and interpret findings in relation to existing literature and professional practice. Ethical practice, academic integrity, and critical reflection are central throughout the research process.

You will engage in both guided and independent research activity, developing increasing autonomy as the project progresses. The module culminates in the dissemination of your findings to academic and/or professional audiences through written reports and/or oral presentations. Overall, the module develops advanced critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, enabling you to apply research evidence effectively to inform and enhance professional practice in sport and exercise therapy.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Asynchronous Assessment Self Reflective Assessment 1 Assessment 1 – Research Project The journal article submission is designed to assess students’ ability to plan, conduct, and report an independent primary research project in sports therapy. By completing a full journal-style article, students demonstrate mastery of all stages of the research process, including formulation of a research question, literature review, methodological design, data collection and analysis, interpretation of results, and discussion within the context of existing literature. 0 5000 80 No 40
Synchronous Onsite Oral Assessment Individual Presentation (Synchronous Onsite) The Poster Defence assesses students’ ability to succinctly communicate their research findings to an academic and professional audience. Students present key aspects of their independent sports therapy research in a visually engaging format and respond to questions, demonstrating understanding of methodology, data analysis, and interpretation. 10 N/A 20 No 40
