Educational Aim

o The main aims of the course are: BSc Top up Level 6
o Enable students to further develop the knowledge, expertise, skills, personal qualities and attitudes necessary for a high standard of practice with children and young people
o Provide a critical perspective for a range of careers within the children and young people’s sector, and facilitate the student’s ability to challenge current practice.
o Consolidate, motivate and promote the flexibility which will be the basis for future career development or enhancement.
o Prepare the student for future learning and study, including other graduate programmes.

Learning Outcomes

A1 Critically analyse theories and concepts that form the basis for children and young people’s ever evolving provision.
A2 Evaluate theories and concepts hat form the basis for effective leadership and management within children and young people’s services.
A3 Explore, and utilise findings from the relevant research-based evidence underpinning contemporary Child and Young People’s provision / management
A4 Critically explore the relevance of Professional, legal and ethical implications of services for children and young people.
A5 Evaluate the development and application of policy and guidance relevant to their own practice.
B1 Produce academic sources as evidence to inform ideas and assess how to source, select and organise information in order to work effectively with children and young people in a variety of settings.
B2 Evaluate and present evidence from research and apply to practice in Children and Young People’s health, education or social care.
B3 Assess independent and systematic enquiry and analysis in order to focus effectively on children and young people’s issues.
B4 Effectively structure and evaluate evidence to create solutions.
C1 Evaluate and implement a variety of relevant perspectives for the acquisition of effective practice in children and young people’s services.
C2 Analyse situations and tasks that are relevant to everyday working within a childcare arena.

Teaching and Assessment


Learning and Teaching Methods

All of the modules are delivered by a combination of methods and will be flexible in incorporating some or all of the following: formal lectures, tutor and student –led tutorials, practical workshops, case studies, self-directed study which is guided by module handbooks. To enhance learning students are available online via the Blackboard / Moodle portal. Staff are familiar with social media platforms and other web based tools to facilitate learning

The learning outcomes will be assessed through a variety of assessment mechanisms including formal oral individual / group presentations and written coursework.

Entry Requirements

Admission to the course is typically through the following qualifications:

To progress onto the Top up year at level 6, students need to successfully complete 240 credits at level 4/5 on the Foundation Degree or an equivalent course of study relating to children and young people through the University Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). We have discussed providing the opportunity of progression to those students who have the L4, L5 Preparing for Leadership and Management in Children’s Care Learning Play and Development, particularly since level 4 has been aligned to the newly validated course.
