Module Aims

To demonstrate advanced counselling skills drawing on theory, skills and client assessment to evidence competent and ethical counselling practice.

To demonstrate development of the inner supervisor in critically evaluating skills to demonstrate safe and ethical practice.

To prepare students to be competent members of the counselling profession able to draw on an advanced applied knowledge of ethically, legally and theoretically informed practice to support decision making in a professional context when working with complex issues.

Content Summary

Theory:

Advanced and critical engagement with contemporary humanistic and cognitive behavioural theory and skills to include Mindfulness practice in counselling, Guided imagery, and Empty Chair techniques.

Motivational Interviewing theory and skills within pluralistic practice.

Applying Transactional principles within a pluralistic framework.

Working with intimacy.

Working with specific client problems within a pluralist framework e.g. substance use problems; grief and loss; domestic violence; sexual abuse.

Professional Practice:

Facilitated case discussions and peer counselling supervision.

Cultural competence & working with diversity in practice.

Responding to complex ethical dilemmas

Counselling in different contexts.

Working with other professions

Using counselling supervision to guide practice.

Preparing for a future career.

Skills development:

Integrating Mindfulness activities

Safe and ethical setting up, running and reviewing Guided Imagery for different client issues.

Safe and ethical setting up, running and reviewing Empty Chair and Two Chair work.

Motivational Interviewing skills for working with resistance.

Targeted individual skills development.

Working with outcome measures

*In order to meet the Professional Practice criteria for the course it is a requirement that you attendand actively participate in at least 80% of all timetabled lectures, meetings and other learning activities arranged as part of this module.
