Educational Aim

To provide students with the opportunity to build a broad knowledge base in relation to effective business management, business functions and business operations. Recognising the importance of commercial awareness and the nature of the modern work environment in developing a wide range of academic and vocational skills.

Learning Outcomes

A1 Demonstrate an understanding of key functional areas of a wide range of organisations
A2 Demonstrate an awareness of the internal and external commercial environment which impacts on organisations
A3 Utilise a wide range of managerial skills and behaviours appropriate to the workplace
A4 Demonstrate an understanding of the various processes, procedures and practices for effective management of organisations. It includes theories, models, frameworks, tasks and roles of management, including the management of people and corporate social responsibility

Employer Engagement

Visiting Speakers
All partners have regular guest speakers, often course alumni

Work Placements
A number of modules, for example, the Live Project, require students to demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical learning in a work context, usually via existing part-time employment.

Work-based Learning
By including the option of part-time delivery, students are able to combine study with either full or part time employment.

Other
As well as careers events offered at individual partner colleges, all students have the opportunity to visit USW careers fairs if they wish to do so.

Learning Support

Induction
Each partner college runs a course specific induction programme at the start of each academic year.

Personal Academic Coach
Specific arrangements as detailed in partner course handbooks.

Learner Analytics
Partners all operate an attendance monitoring system and have access to the USW learning analytics platform for their learners.

Tutorials
Across the course a number of module specific delivery patterns are utilised, including workshops, tutorials, seminars and lectures.

Formative Assessment
A number of the modules, for example, The Management of Financial Information, include formative assessment throughout.

Progress meetings
Individual partner colleges operate their own systems for progress monitoring, including attendance, engagement and attainment, as detailed in the course handbooks.

Online Resources
Students have access to online resources for all modules via Blackboard.

Advice Zone
Students have access to both the college student support systems as detailed in the resources statement and course handbooks, as well as access to the USW Advice zone online.

Disability
All partner colleges are required to comply with relevant legislation and have access to USW support and guidance regarding disability policies and procedures.

IT/Library
Each partner has dedicated library and IT facilities, as detailed in the resources statement and the course handbooks.

Course Exit Points

Higher National Diploma 240 credits of which at least 120 must be at Level 5 or above and the remaining credits at Level 4 or above Final
Certificate of Higher Education 120 credits of which at least 100 must be at Level 4 or above and no more than 20 at Level 3 Exit

Progression Route

Having achieved 240 credits and successfully completed the HND Business Management award students will be well prepared for a variety of employment opportunities across many aspects of business management. Alternatively a student may choose progress onto the following level 6 courses at USW or at a partner college (where available):BA (Hons) Business Management or any of the named specialist routes, for example BA (Hons) Business Management (Accounting and Finance).


Entry Requirements

Admission to the course is typically through the following qualifications:

The normal entry criteria for HND awards is grades DD at A Level or Pass, Pass, Pass at BTEC Extended Diploma or the equivalent of 48 UCAS Tariff points.

Other qualifications and relevant work experience, for example NVQ level 3, ILM level 3 certificate or diploma in a business /management related field are also considered on an individual basis, as is significant and prior experience in a relevant discipline. All non-standard applications are referred to the Course Leader for approval.
